Which is your favorite Monkey Island Game?
No offense, but I'm almost tempted to close this thread :shifty: This discussion has been done to death elsewhere (by many or most of the same people). That said... the second one ¬

I don't think we have had this discussion in four years, at least at Adventure Gamers. It's about time to recheck our preferences.

I concur. Let's face it, we're almost entirely from an MnM or AG background. The liklihood that our opinions have changed is very small indeed.
We might as well accept right now that the order will be 2, 3, 1, 4 and then forget about it. Mind you, i preferred 3

Ok, that's it! The thread is closed and 'Monkey Island' has been inserted into the list of cursewords. Every time you mention it, it will be replaced with 'that game'.

Hey anyone here remember Monkey Island? I think it was released in 1990.
IMHO it was a complete ripoff of Sid Meier's Pirates.

No, never heard of that. Man, someone should really make a game like Pirates of the Caribbean where you can like walk around and stuff, just like Gamespot said.
Anyone heard of Samorost?

Ron Gilbert! I haven't heard his name yet so I might as well say this: Monkey Island 3 and 4 suck because it wasn't made by Ron Gilbert.

Tim Schafer should buy the rights to Monkey Island and make a sequel where Guybrush and Elaine have a kid who travels through time to Day of the Tentacle but then there's a mistake with the time machine and he dies but actually he's Mexican so he goes to the Land of the Dead and hangs out with Manny!@!!

I would say that my favourite Monkey Island would have to be Monkey Island 3. Not the LucasArts ripoff though. I am talking about the bootleg prototype version designed by Ron Gilbert which was never released to the public. You know, the one which explains the ending of MI2 as it was intended. Thankfully my friends and I were able to get hold of this because we are just such cool guys. Anyway just thought I would let everyone know that I won't be giving out copies. Oh well, that's life I guess.

Didn't I hear stuff a couple of years ago about new people taking over control of LucasArts, and they having intentions of going back to the roots and breathe life into old franchises and stuff, or was that just one of those dreams I have that were so non-spectacular I actually start thinking they really happened?

Well that's kind of what Simon Jeffery wanted to do when he was still President, but he's been gone for months now. Now they've got some LucasFilm suit filling the position until the company fades away ( :shifty: ), so you might as well forget about it.

Well, he didn't write the screenplay.
His movies have never really been about brilliant writing, though, that's for sure.
Well, he didn't write the screenplay.
ok, that pretty much nullifies my comment, but still. I know his movies arn't expected to have sizzlingly good dialogue but surely even he should realise it was just plain bad.
I mean...hmm...i don't know if i can think of any of his films that wasn't afflicted by this. I once watched the phantom menace with the sound off and, you know what? I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more.

Fair enough. I still harbor love for the original Star Wars trilogy as well as Indiana Jones, but that's generally in spite of the writing rather than in any way because of it. Interesting point: Lucas got a Best Original Screenplay nomination in '77 for Star Wars. Crazy, eh?
yeah, don't get me wrong, i love the original trilogy and indiana jones but there sure are some stinkers in all of them.

Yes, I'm afraid I have to agree on this one, Gene Roddenberry does kick ass. I wasn't actually serious though. :erm: I'm pretty frustrated with people who talk about "[insert some fairly creative dude]'s brilliant vision", and bitch about how nothing should ever waiver from that brilliantly inspired dream that person once had. Gene Roddenbery's work bleaks in comparison to what Dorothy Fontana, Ira Steven Behr or Michael Piller did for Star Trek. Ron Gilbert was a great designer, but so were all the SCUMMites who added so much detail to his games. People just need easily recognizable names so they can complain on forums about how his vision has been compromised or other such bullshit.
Sorry, I ranted there for a bit. It wasn't intended towards you.

Did anybody read that one computer gaming world article that had over-rated games. CMI was one of them! Can you believe it? I love CMI.
On a nother note, if you compare the Monkey Island series to the Simpsons you'll find a startling duality.
The first MI is like the first season: a solid beginning to a series with a great sense of humor that is more smirk than laugh, but still enjoyable.
The 2nd MI is like the next 3 seasons: absolutely great and mch more refined version of the first outing's humor.
The 3rd is like the last good seasons (5-8 or something like that), which uses a more fast paced, everything-is-funny style, but loses a bit of the story telling panache.
The 4th one is shit, just like the simpson's today.
That parallel holds true to a lot of long-running mass entertainment, especially the kind that change hands over time like many game sequels and long-standing television shows. Its also depressing if you happen to be a fan of the thing that starts to suck.
